Article Manager in Joomla 1.7

To manage articles in Joomla 1.7, login to the Joomla 1.7 website as its administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/administrator in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Joomla 1.7 } and then click on Log in as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as Joomla 1.7 Admin, a Control Panel page opens as shown in Diagram 2.

The Control Panel provides access to many default Joomla functions and features. From the Control Panel, you can create and manage articles and categories. Other features available in the Control Panel are the media, menu, language, and user managers.

In the top menu, locate the link the Content. Click Content. From the drop down menu that appearsclick on Article Manager as shown in Diagram 3.
OR
Click on Article Manager in the Control Panel as shown in Diagram 3.

The Article manager screen opens, this is where you can create new articles or edit existing articles.

In order to create a new article, click on the New at the top right hand corner as shown in Diagram 4.
Or you can directly access through Content -> Article Manager -> Add New Article, from Control Panel screen.

Enter the following details for the article as shown in Diagram 5. The following are the list of options provided:

Title: The Title for the article. This may or may not display on the page, depending on the parameter values you choose.

Alias: The internal name of the article. Normally, you can leave this blank and Joomla! will fill in a default value. The default value is the Title or Name in lower case and with dashes instead of spaces. You may enter the Alias manually. The Alias should consist of lowercase letters with no blank spaces. You can use a hyphen (-) to indicate blank spaces. The Alias will be used in the URL when SEF is activated.

Category: The item (category, menu item, and so on) that is the parent of the item being assigned to. If you selected 'Uncategorized' for the Section, the Category will automatically be 'Uncategorized'.

Status: Select the status of the item. The options provided are:

  • Published: The item is published. This is the only state that will allow regular website users to view this item.
  • Unpublished: The item is unpublished.
  • Archived: The item has been archived.
  • Trashed: The item has been sent to the Trash.

Access: This determines who can access to this category. The options are:

  • Public: Everyone has access
  • Registered: Only registered users can have access
  • Special: Only users with author status or higher can have access
  • Customer Access level: Only registered customer group level can have access.

Permissions: You can set the article permission by clicking on Set Permissions.

Featured: Assigning the article to the feature blog layout. If you set the article as “Featured” then it will get assigned as a front page article.

Language: Set a language for this article.

Article Text: Article content which you want to appear in the site is entered in the text-area.

Publishing Options:

  • Created by: It contains the user that created the item. Click the Select User to select the user.
  • Created by alias: Enter the name of the user that created the item. You can leave the field blank.
  • Created Date: This field contains the date of creation of the article. You can select the date and time by clicking on icon besides it. You can even leave the field blank.
  • Start Publishing: This field contains the start date of publishing of the article. This is an optional field, you can leave the field blank. You can select the date and time by clicking on icon besides it.
  • Finish Publishing: This field contains the end date of publishing of the article. This is an optional field, you can leave the field blank. You can select the date and time by clicking on icon besides it.

Metadata Options:

  • Meta Description: Text entered here will be added to the page's HTML output and may be displayed in search engine results which are an optional.
  • Meta Keywords: Comma-separated list which will be added to the HTML keywords output. This is also an optional.
  • Author. The author of this article.
  • Robots. This will be added to the page's HTML output. Options are: Use Global, Index-Follow, No index-Follow, Index-No follow, No index-No follow, and Don't display robots tag.
  • Content Rights: It describes what rights other will have to use this article content.
  • External Reference: Reference used to link to external data source. This is an optional field.

Article Permissions:

This section is where you can manage permissions for user group. You can view the article permissions at the bottom of the page. As shown in the Diagram 8. The left part represents the user groups of your Joomla site, while the right part displays permissions for the currently selected group:

Action: The various actions for a currently selected user group are as follows:

  • Create: Users can create new objects (for example: users, menu items, articles, weblinks, and so on).
  • Delete: Users can delete existing objects.
  • Edit: Users can edit existing objects.
  • Edit State: User can change existing objects state (Publish, Unpublish, Archive, Check In and Trash).
  • Edit Own: User can edit objects that they created themselves.

Select New Setting: The permission you want to apply for a given action. Possible values are:

  • Inherited: Permissions from the parent category will be used if there is a parent category or those from the component if there is no parent category.
  • Allowed: The group being edited will be able to take this action within this category.
  • Denied: The group being edited cannot take this action within this category.

Click on Save and Close as shown in Diagram 9, in order to save the article and close the edit screen.
You can also click on Save, in order to save the article data updated and stay on the editable screen.

Article successfully saved” message will be displayed with listing the created article as shown in Diagram 10.

Now to Preview the article Click the View Site in top right hand corner as shown in Diagram 11.

Your article content will be displayed as shown in the Diagram 12.

Manage Article

Archive an Article:

In order to Archive the article, select the Article(s) Check box and the click on the Archive at the top-right hand corner as shown in Diagram 13.

“1 Article archived” message will be displayed as shown in Diagram 14.

Publish/Unpublish an Article:

In order to publish the article, select the Article(s) check box in front click on Publish at the top-right hand corner as shown in Diagram 15.

Unpublish an Article:

In order to Unpublish the article, Select the Article(s) Check box in front click on Unpublish at the top-right hand corner as shown in Diagram 17

Edit an Article:

To edit an article, select the checkbox adjacent to the article that has to be edited and click on Edit as shown in Diagram 19.

The Edit Article window will open.

Edit details and then click on Save and Close as shown in Diagram 20, in order to save the article and close the edit screen.

You can click on Save, in order to save the updated article data and stay on the edit screen.

Trashing an Article:

In order to Trash an article from Article Manager, Select the Article(s) Check box and click on Trash at the top-right hand corner as shown in Diagram 21.

“1 article trashed” message will be displayed as shown in Diagram 22

Note: Trashing an Article doesn’t delete an article permanently. You can still recover the article from the trashed item list.

Recover an Article from Trash:

To recover an article that has been trashed, navigate to the Select Status combo box in the top right area above the column headings in Article Manager. Select status Trashed as shown in the Diagram 23

After selecting Trashed articles, a list of thrashed articles is displayed. Select the checkbox adjacent to the article that you want to publish and click on Publish in the topright corner as shown in Diagram 24.
Or,
Click on the Publish item icon in Status column as shown in Diagram 24.

Delete An Article Permanently:

To delete an article permanently, navigate to the Select Status combo box in the top right area above the column headings of Article Manager. Select the status Trashed as shown in the Diagram 26

A list of thrashed articles will be displayed. Select the checkbox adjacent to the thrashed article that you want to delete permanently and click on Empty Trash in the topright corner as shown in Diagram 27.

“1 article deleted” message will be displayed and as shown in Diagram 28.

New Feature Added in Joomla 1.7 - You can batch process the articles.

Move / Copy an Article(s):

To move/copy an Article(s), select the checkbox adjacent to the article(s) that has to be moved /copied.
In Batch process the selected articles, Select Category for Move/Copy from the drop down list. After selecting the categories, set the radio button to Copy and click on Process as shown in Diagram 29.
OR set the radio button to Move and click on Process as required.

New articles will be copied to the selected category as shown in Diagram 30.
