To manage users in your Joomla 1.7 login to Joomla as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/administrator in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Joomla} and then click on Login as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in to the backend, a control panel page opens as shown in Diagram 2.
The Control Panel provides access to many default Joomla! functions and features. From the Control Panel, you can create and manage articles and categories. Other features available in the Control Panel are the media, menu, language, and user managers.

The Joomla 1.7 User manager is where you can control all Joomla users, Administrators as well as registered users.
Access the User Manager by clicking on the User Manager icon in the Control Panel, or by clicking on User Manager in the Users menu in the back-end of your Joomla installation as shown in Diagram 3.

You will see a list of users with specific details of Name, Username, Group, Email and so on. You can also edit, create and delete users through User manager.
In order to create a new user, click on the New icon at the top right hand corner as shown in Diagram 4.
Or you can directly access through Users à User Manager à Add New User, from Control Panel screen.

You will see different fields where you can fill in information of the user as shown in Diagram 5.
Name: You have to enter the real name of the user.
Login name: You have to enter the username of the user. When a user wants to log in, the user has to fill in this username to gain access to different features of your website.
Password: You have to fill in a (new) password. Although this field is not required, the user will not be able to log in if no password is set.
Confirm Password: You have to fill in an identical password as the password field above. This field is required when you filled in the new password field.
E-mail: The email address of the user will be entered here.
Assigned User Groups: You have to select a group for your user. The following Groups are available:
A Publisher or higher must approve.
Receive System E-mails: Set this to ‘Yes’ if you want your user to receive automatic e-mail messages. The messages can vary from notifications to important notices.
Block User: If set to ‘Yes’, your user will be blocked, and all access to the website's features will be prevented.
Backend template style: You can select back-end template style of the user. All installed template style for the back-end will be displayed in the drop-down box.
Backend language: You can select the back-end language of the user. All installed languages for the back-end will be displayed in the drop-down box.
Frontend Language: You can select the front-end language of the user. All installed languages for the front-end will be displayed in the drop-down box.
Editor: You can select the front-end and back-end editor of the user. All installed editors will be displayed in the drop-down box. Joomla 1.6 comes with TinyMCE already installed as its editor. Joomla permits other editors to be installed as plugins.
Help Site: You can set the help site URL for users. Default is the Help Server set in the Global Configuration.
Time Zone: You can set the time zone for users. Default is the Time Zone set in the Global Configuration.
NOTE: Name, Login Name and e-mail address are required fields while creating a user.
If you did not fill in a particular language, editor, help site and time zone, the default settings from the Global Configuration, Language Manager and Template Manager will be used.
Click on Save & Close as shown in Diagram 5, in order to save the user and close the edit screen.
You can either click on Save, in order to save the user and stay on the editable screen.

A successful creation of user is displayed in the message as shown in Diagram 6.

In order to edit the existing user, you have to click the user name ( which is a link ) or select the checkbox adjacent to the user name and click on the Edit icon as shown in Diagram 7.

In the screen as shown in Diagram 8, you can edit the entire user data entered earlier. Make the necessary changes. Click on Save and Close as shown in Diagram 8, in order to save the user and close the edit screen.
You can either click on Save, in order to save the user data updated and stay on the editable screen.

The user will be successfully saved with the newly edited details as shown in Diagram 9.

In order to delete an existing user select the check-box adjacent to the user Name and click on the Delete icon at the top-right hand corner as shown in Diagram 10.

The user will be successfully deleted with all detail.
“One user successfully deleted” message will be displayed as shown in Diagram 11.
