Articles: Archived Article List

Description:

Archived Article List is used to create a menu link which shows a list of Articles that have been archived and can be searched by date. They are no longer published but are still stored on the site.

Articles are archived using the Article Manager.

On clicking, the Archived Article Layout Link, the control settings for this type of menu item opens as shown in Diagram 1.

Menu Item Details (The menu item detail is common for all the menu type)

  • Title: The name for the menu item. It will be displayed in the menu.
  • Alias: This is the name of the search-engine friendly URL after the domain name.
  • Link: This is an URL that will be represented by this menu item.
  • Display in: With this option you can move the menu item to another menu. The options field presents you with a list of the available menus.
  • Parent Item: Menus can also contain nested, tree-like items. Top means that the item is at the uppermost level. The rest of the items represent existing menu items. So, you can select the parent item for your menu item.
  • Published: Whether the menu will be published or concealed.
  • Order: You can change the order of this menu item after saving it.
  • Access Level : The level of access that is allowed to access this menu item.
  • On Click, Open in: You will be asked to decide, if you click this, the arises page can be Parent Window with Browser Navigation, New Window with Browser Navigation, or New Window without Browser Navigation.

Note: Articles assigned to the Uncategorized Section will not be displayed on the Archived Article List layout.

Parameters

On the right hand side, Parameters (Basic) has one option (Order) that allows you to set the sort order of Archived Articles as shown in Diagram 2.
The options in the sort Order are:

  • Default: Default article listing.
  • Oldest first: Ordered by the articles creation date, oldest to newest.
  • Most recent first: Ordered by the articles creation date, newest to oldest.
  • Title (Alphabetical): Ordered by Title from A to Z.
  • Title (Reverse Alphabetical): Ordered by Title from Z to A.
  • Author - Alphabetical: Ordered by Author Name from A to Z.
  • Author - Reverse Alphabetical: Ordered by Author Name from Z to A.
  • Most Hits: Ordered by article Hits (views), most viewed to least viewed.
  • Least Hits: Ordered by article Hits (views), least viewed to most viewed.
  • Order: Ordered according to the user specified order set in the Article Manager.

Note: Basic parameters are different for each of the menu types.

Parameters (Component):

  • Show Unauthorized Links: If this item is set to 'Yes', links to registered content will be displayed without requiring the user to log in. The user will need to be logged in to view the Article content.
  • Show Article Title: This item sets whether or not the Article title will be displayed on the output page.
  • Title Linkable: If this item is set to 'Yes', the title will be a hyperlink to the Article content.
  • Show Intro Text: This item will show the Article content that is before the 'Read more' system object.
  • Section Name: You can set whether or not the name of the Section of the Article will be displayed.
  • Section Title Linkable: If the Section Name is displayed, setting this to 'Yes' will make the Section Title a hyperlink to the Section.
  • Category Title: You can set whether or not the title of the Category of the Article will be displayed.
  • Category Title Linkable: If the Category Title is displayed, setting this to 'Yes' will make the Category title a hyperlink to the Category.
  • Author Name: You can set whether or not to display the Author's Name.
  • Created Date and Time: You can set whether or not to display the Articles created date and time.
  • Modified Date and Time: You can set whether or not to display the Articles modified date and time.
  • Show Navigation: If this item is set to 'Show', 'Previous' and 'Next' article links will be displayed at the bottom of the Article.
  • Read more... Link: If this item is set to 'Show', the 'Read more...' link will be displayed if the Main text has been created for the Article.
  • Article Rating/Voting: If this item is set to 'Show', users will be able to Rate articles using a small web form displayed with the Article.
  • Icons: If this is set to 'Show', the PDF, E-mail and Print items (if displayed) will be Icons, if not, they will be Text.
  • PDF Icon: You can set whether or not the PDF Icon will be displayed.
  • Print Icon: You can set whether or not the Print Icon will be displayed.
  • E-mail Icon: You can set whether or not the E-mail Icon will be displayed.
  • For each feed item show: This item allows you to configure how much of the Article text will be displayed in the RSS or Atom feed.

Note: The default value for all of the Component Parameters is Use Global. You can configure Global Parameters from the Article Manager toolbar. Also, modifying a parameter value from this listing will only affect the way the content is displayed for this item.

Parameters (System):

  • Page Title: It allows you to set the page title for this item, if left blank, the default title will be used.
  • Show Page Title: You can set whether or not the Page Title is displayed on the page.
  • Page Class Suffix: This item allows you to set a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) class suffix to be used, which will enable you to create page dependent CSS styles.
  • Menu Image: You can select an image to display next to the Menu Item.
  • SSL Enabled: You can select whether or not this link should use SSL and the Secure Site URL.

Note: The component and system parameter is common for all Articles Layout.

Click on the Save icon at the top-right hand corner.
The menu item would be successfully created and saved as shown in Diagram 3.

Click on Preview at the top-right hand corner to view the front page of your website.

In the menu, you would see the main menu item which was created as shown in Diagram 4.

Click on the Archive article menu link. This link would display all the Joomla articles that have been archived. Users can search for an archive article by Date and in a number of other ways.
The one which is highlighted in yellow is displayed on clicking the menu link as shown in Diagram 5.
