Creating and Saving a New Presentation

When you start Open Office.org Impress, the Presentation Wizard appears. It offers a variety of ways to create a new presentation. Under Type:

  • Empty presentation: Creates a presentation from scratch.
  • From template: Uses a template design already created as the basis for creating a new presentation. The wizard changes to show a list of available templates. Simply select the template desired.
  • Open existing presentation: Continue to work on a previously created presentation. The wizard changes to show a list of existing presentations, from which a template can be selected as required.

NOTE: If you do not want to use the Wizard, just follow the steps described below:

Creating a Presentation Using a Template:

A presentation template is a saved presentation file. This file contains predefined slide formats, which permits a presentation to be built quickly for business needs. Impress has theme oriented, templates that can be used for creating presentations. Create a presentation using a template using the following steps:

Select File -> New -> Templates and Documents as shown in Diagram 1.

Templates and Documents dialog box is opened as shown in Diagram 2.

Select Templates in the group on the left to access the list of template categories as shown in Diagram 3.

Double click Presentations and start browsing for a specific template you like.
Select the template required for your presentation as shown in Diagram 4.

Click on Open in the Templates and Documents window, to open a new task in Impress as shown in Diagram 5.

Opening An Existing Presentation:

In order to open an existing presentation, follow some simple steps.

  • Select File->Open.
  • The Open dialog box appears as shown in Diagram 6.
  • Select the file to be opened from its appropriate folder.
  • Click on Open.

Saving A Presentation:

In order to save a presentation in the native Impress format (SXI), follow some simple steps.

  • Select File->Save or File->Save As.
  • A Save As dialog box opens as shown in Diagram 7.
  • Type in the name of the file in the File Name text box.
  • Click Save.

In order to save a presentation as a template (STI), follow these simple steps.

  • Select File->Templates->Save and
  • A Templates dialog box opens as shown in the Diagram 8.
  • Type the name of the template in the New Template text box and specify the category in the Categories list box where the template has to be saved.
  • Then click OK.

Closing a Presentation:

In order to close a presentation, select File->Close. If the current file is not yet saved, Impress will display a dialog box with Save and Discard options as shown in Diagram 9.

Select Save if the presentation has to be saved.

Select Discard if the presentation is to be discarded.

Select Cancel to return to the file without closing the presentation.

Exiting Impress:

To exit from Impress, select File->Exit. Alternatively click on the cross button B1 in the right corner of the Impress window.
