Entering and Editing Text

Every slide in a presentation contains text of some kind, even if it is just the title. Entering and editing text in Impress is similar to entering and editing text in any OpenOffice.org application.

Text Placeholders:

Text placeholders are used to contain text. The default text in the placeholder must be replaced with the text necessary as shown in Diagram 1. Text can be entered in a text placeholder by clicking on the text placeholder and simply keying in text. The sample text written in the placeholder will disappear as soon as the new text is typed in.

If the placeholder already contains some text that must be replaced then click inside the placeholder, which will select the text. Then start typing in the text required. When finished, click anywhere in the gray area of the workspace to exit the placeholder .

Text Placeholders come preformatted with font type, font weight, font size, and so on. They can be resized and scaled by dragging the sizing handles found along its thick gray border. If the text does not fit in the placeholder, adjust the width or height of the placeholder appropriately so that the text fits.

Inserting Text:

To insert a text in the slide, you have to follow the steps:

  • If the slide layout is Blank, Choose a slide layout using the Layouts task pane on the right side of the screen as shown in Diagram 2 and apply it to the slide by clicking on the slide.

Impress offers various types of predefined layouts that can be applied to a slide. On hovering the mouse cursor over the layout thumbnail, a tooltip with a summary of the contents is displayed.

Note: If the layout is changed when the slide already contains contents, Impress will not delete the contents, so slide elements may overlap.

  • Click on the slide title, which reads Click to add title as shown in Diagram 3.

  • The text (Click to add title) disappears and is replaced by blinking cursor as shown in Diagram 4. Enter Title appropriately in the textbox holder. The text will take on the formatting that has been applied to the design template.

The plain, white slide you see when you first start up OpenOffice Impress is the default design template for the program.
