Platinum SEO Configuration

This WordPress tutorial explains how to setup and configure the Platinum SEO WordPress plugin for your WordPress blog.

Installing and activating this plugin alone will not have any impact on your WordPress Blog’s SEO. You need to set values for each of the options that Platinum SEO offers.

To configure the WordPress Platinum SEO plugin on your WordPress driven Blog, login to WordPress as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/wp-admin in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing WordPress} and then click on Log In as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as WordPress Admin, a Dashboard page opens as shown in Diagram 2.

The Dashboard provides access to different WordPress functions and features.

In the left menu, locate the link Platinum SEO. Click on Platinum SEO as shown in Diagram 3.

The Platinum SEO Plugin Options page is displayed as shown in Diagram 4.

Platinum SEO has some of the options to optimize your WordPress blog for search engines. Once set, these would provide smart on-site WordPress SEO (search engine optimization) benefits to your invaluable WordPress site.

The following are the options in this WordPress SEO plugin as shown in Diagram 5 and Diagram 6 that would provide smart on-site WordPress SEO benefits to your WordPress blog/site.

Automatically do 301 redirects for permalink changes : Always check this option. It automatically redirect pages at permalink changes (301 redirect ).

Home Title : Enter the title of your homepage. Enter your global primary target keyword phrase FIRST.
This is independent of any other option. If not set, the default blog title will get used.

Home Description : This option lets you specify the META description tag for your homepage. The default is, however, no META description for your home page, if this option is not set. In this option:

  • Put target keyword phrase FIRST.
  • Generate more detailed description of your site as a whole.
  • Try including a few more keyword phrases that you are optimizing for.
  • Add “buying” keywords if the site markets products and/or services.

Home Keywords (comma separated) : A comma separated list of the most important keywords for your site homepage. Use optimal number of keywords. The default is, however, no META keywords for your home page, if this option is not set.

Canonical URLs : Checking the option enables automatic generation of Canonical URLs for your entire WordPress blog installation. This will help to prevent duplicate content penalties by Google which can be levied on you on pretext of same content. It is a must to check this option On.

Rewrite Titles : Always check this option. It’s all about the title tag. This is the information that you see in your browser’s title bar.
This is not visible on a page or a post or in fact any part of your blog, but only in the browser’s title bar and of course in the source code of your blog. If set, all page, post, category, search and archive page titles get rewritten. You can specify the format for them.

The Post Title Format, Page Title Format and Category Title Format is optional, you can leave it as default, especially when your blog title contains keywords.

Archive Title Format, Tag Title Format, Search Title Format, Description Format, 404 Title Format and Paged Format is also optional; you can leave it as default.

Use Categories for META keywords: Check this if you want your categories for a given post to be used as META keywords for the post (in addition to any keywords you specify on the post edit page).

Use noindex for Categories: If you do not want to index your categories pages to avoid duplicate content then platinum SEO plugin gives this option.

Use noindex for Date based Archives: This option lets you prevent archives from being indexed by the search engines.

Use Tags for META keywords: Check this if you want your tags for a given post to be used as META keywords for the post (in addition to any keywords you specify on the post edit page).

Use noindex for Tag Archives: This option lets you prevent Tag pages from being indexed by the search engines.

Use noindex for comment pages of posts(Introduced in wordpress 2.7): Check this for excluding comments pages from being indexed.

Use noindex for comments RSS feeds, Use noindex for all RSS feeds, Use noindex for Search result pages on the site:
These options lets you prevent your comments RSS feeds, all other RSS feeds and Search result pages from being indexed by the search engines.

Use noindex for sub pages: This option lets you prevent sub pages of home from being indexed by the search engines.

Use noindex for author archives: This option lets you prevent author archives from being indexed by the search engines.

Add noodp meta tag: Check this for adding noopd meta tag.

Add noydir meta tag: Check this for adding noydir meta tag.

nofollow category listings on pages, nofollow category listings on posts: These options lets you tell the search engines, not to follow category listings on your posts and pages. Thus you preserve more Page Rank to be shared amongst your posts.

nofollow archive listings on pages, nofollow archive listings on posts: These options lets you tell the search engines, not to follow archive listings on your posts and pages.

nofollow external links on front page: Check this to nofollow external links on front page including home, category, author, tag and search pages.

nofollow login and registration links: This option lets you tell the search engines not to follow login and registration links on your posts or pages. Thus you preserve and push more Page Rank down to your individual posts.

nofollow links to tag pages: This option lets you tell the search engines, not to follow tag links on your posts and pages. Thus you preserve and push more Page Rank down to your individual posts.

Autogenerate Descriptions: Check this and your META descriptions will get autogenerated, if there’s no excerpt.

Additional Post Headers: You can enter additional headers, even references to stylesheets or google, yahoo, msn verification links. It will be copied verbatim to your header on post page.

Additional Page Headers: You can enter additional headers, even references to stylesheets or google, yahoo, msn verification links. It will be copied verbatim to your header on pages.

Additional Home Headers: You can enter additional headers, even references to stylesheets or google, yahoo, msn verification links. It will be copied verbatim to your header on home page.

Log important events: Check this and Platinum SEO pack will create a log of important events (platinum_seo_pack.log) in its plugin directory which might help debugging it.

Scroll down till the end of page.

Click on Update Options to save the changes made as shown in Diagram 7.
