Categories provide a helpful way to group related posts together, and to quickly inform readers what a group of posts are about. Categories also make it easier for people to find content that interests them on you Blog. Categories are similar to, but broader than, Tags.
Depending on the theme and widgets activated, categories can be displayed:
You can assign multiple categories per post (you must assign the post to at least one). Categories can be organized hierarchically. Since each post in WordPress is filed under one (or more) Categorie(s), this aids in navigation and allows posts and to be grouped with others of similar content.
To create a category for post(s) in WordPress 3.X.X login to WordPress as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/wp-admin in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Wordpress} and then click on Log In as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as WordPress Admin, a Dashboard page opens as shown in Diagram 2.
The Dashboard provides access to different WordPress functions and features.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Categories as shown in Diagram 3.

From here you can add new and manage existing categories as shown in Diagram 4. The right hand side will display all the categories created.

Enter the following details as shown in Diagram 5.
Name : Enter the name of your category. This will be displayed if the categories widget is enabled. The Category Name must be unique.
Slug : The “slug” is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens. The Category slug must be unique.
Parent : If you want to nest a category within a category, select the parent category. Otherwise leave at none.
Description : Describe what the category is for. This description will appear as a tooltip if category widget is enabled (Optional).
Click Add New Category as shown in Diagram 5.

The category is successfully created as shown in Diagram 6.
Name, Description, Slug and Number of Posts of a category(s) can be viewed from this section.

Likewise, you can create as many categories required as shown in Diagram 7.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Posts as shown in Diagram 8.

Click the Title of the post as shown in Diagram 9 or click Edit to open the post in its editable mode.

You can add new category and bind the current post to it, if required, using the Categories module to the right of the post editor. Click +Add new Category as shown in Diagram 10.

Enter the category name in the textbox field. You may assign the new category to a parent from the drop down option value.
Click Add New Category as shown in Diagram 11.

The category is successfully added into the list of categories as shown in Diagram 12.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Posts as shown in Diagram 13.

Click the Title of the post as shown in Diagram 14 or click Edit to open the post in its editable mode.
NOTE: Notice that the Categories column of specific Posts are bound to Uncategorized (i.e. that particular post is not bound to a particular category) as shown in Diagram 14.

You can now assign categories to posts before being published using the Categories module on the right hand side of the post editor as shown in Diagram 15.

Select the checkbox next to a category name to associate the current post to the category as shown in Diagram 16.

In the right hand side, Publish box, click Update to save the changes made on the post as shown in Diagram 17.

“Post updated” message is displayed as shown in Diagram 18.

In the front end of website, locate Categories, click on any Post under the Category to read the post as shown in Diagram 19. In this case the - Starting WordPress – post is about to be read.

The post related the category is displayed as shown in Diagram 20.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Posts as shown in Diagram 21.

The Categories column of specific Post(s) are bound to Uncategorized (i.e. that particular post is not bound to a particular category) as shown in Diagram 22.
In our case “WordPress Guide Part – 1,2 & 3” can be bound under a single category.

Click the Title of the posts as shown in Diagram 23 or click Edit to open the posts in its editable mode.

You can now assign categories to posts before being published using the Categories module on the right hand side of the post editor as shown in Diagram 24.

Select the checkbox next to a category name to associate the current post to the category as shown in Diagram 25.
In the right hand side, Publish box, click Update to save the changes made on the post as shown in Diagram 25.

Likewise, bound all the Posts to a same category as shown in Diagram 26

In the front end of website, locate Categories, click on any Post under the Category to read the post as shown in Diagram 27. In this case the - Advanced WordPress – post is about to be read.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Categories as shown in Diagram 29.

Click the Title of the Category or click Edit to open the category in its editable mode as shown in Diagram 30.

The Edit Category screen is displayed as shown in Diagram 31. From here you can edit Category Name, Category Slug and Category Description.

After making all the changes, click Update as shown in Diagram 32.
In our case, we edited the slug and added a description for the category.
When done click Update as shown in diagram 32.

The “Item updated” message is displayed as shown in Diagram 33.

To test this out, hover the cursor over the Category, its description is displayed as shown in Diagram 34.

In the left menu, locate the link Posts. Click Posts. From the drop down menu that appears click on Categories as shown in Diagram 35.

There are two ways to delete a category:
1) Hover the cursor over the name of the Category and click Delete as shown in Diagram 36.

The “You are about to permanently delete the selected items. ‘Cancel’ to stop, ‘OK’ to delete.” message is displayed.
Click OK as shown in Diagram 37.

2) Select the checkbox next to a category name. From the drop down list box titled Bulk Actions select Delete and Click Apply as shown in Diagram 38.

The “Items deleted” message is displayed as shown in Diagram 39.

NOTE: Deleting a category does not delete the posts in that category. Instead, posts that were assigned to the deleted category are set to Uncategorized.
