The Structure Of A Joomla Template

Think of a Joomla template as an empty structure that divides the viewport of a Browser into specific programmer defined areas.

Some of these empty areas will be filled with Joomla modules, such as:

  1. A Joomla top menu module
  2. A left hand side Joomla vertical menu module
  3. A right hand side Joomla website login module
  4. A Joomla latest news module

And so on

Some of these empty areas will be filled with the content that the website owner wishes to deliver to the site visitor. Content such as:

  1. Text
  2. Images
  3. Podcasts
  4. Videos
  5. Google Maps

And so on

Some of these empty areas will be filled with background colors and images that will determine the look and feel of the Joomla website.

Over time Joomla templates seem to have evolved into a fairly predictable Basic Structure with very few structural differences across the Joomla templates.

Diagram 1 shows the empty areas of a basic Joomla template.
