Product discount is a type of sales promotion tool, used in the consumer market. It is primarily offered as on service(s) or product(s) and is normally clearly labeled as a discount on price. It provides a price saving or other incentive to customer at the time of product / service purchase. As an online store owner, one has to use the same technique when selling products or service via your website.
Product discounts in VirtueMart must be created using the Product Discount Form before being assigned to a product or service. A product discount can be assigned to a new product when it is being added, or by editing the details of an existing product.
Product / Service discounts can be created for different periods of time, which will then be applied appropriately to the products / service displayed in the on-line catalog.
This tutorial, explains how product discounts are implemented in VirtueMart.
To setup a product discount in VirtueMart, login to Joomla as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/administrator in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Joomla} and then click on Login as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as Joomla Admin, a Control Panel page opens as shown in Diagram 2. The Control Panel provides access to different Joomla functions and features.

In the top menu, locate the link Components. Click on Components, from the drop down menu that appears click on VirtueMart as shown in Diagram 3.

The VirtueMart Control Panel is displayed as shown in Diagram 4.

Click on the Products menu under Administration panel located on the left hand side of VirtueMart Control Panel. When you click on Products menu, it expands and displays other related options as shown in Diagram 5.

In order to view or edit a discount on product, click on the link Product Discount List as shown in Diagram 6.
The VirtueMart, Product Discount List page displays links to all the discounts that were created when the VirtueMart sample data was installed at VirtueMart installation time. If there are any discounts that the VirtueMart Admin may have created those are displayed as well.

To create a new discount click on the link Add Product Discount option under Products menu as shown in Diagram 7.

While creating a new discount for product(s) or service(s) enter a Discount amount, as a number, in the Discount amount text box. This is the discount value that you want to have subtracted from the product price.
After providing a Discount amount, select the Discount Type as either Percentage or Total by selecting one of the appropriate radio buttons.
If Percentage is selected, the value entered in the Discount amount text box indicates that you have given a discount of X% on the Product / Service Price. A percentage discount requires a calculation to be done on the current product / service price, the resultant value is then subtracted from the current product / service price.
If Total is selected, the amount entered will simply be subtracted from the current Product / Service Price.
Optionally, you can specify the start and end date for which the discount will be effective.
By clicking on the icon displayed to the right of the Start date of discount field ( ... ), you can specify a start date from a date picker displayed for the discount to be applied to the product or service.
By clicking on the icon displayed to the right of the End date of discount field ( ... ), you can specify a end date from a date picker displayed for the discount to be removed to the product or service.
If a discount is to be applied to a product or service continuously, the End date need not be specified.
Enter a discount percentage in the Discount amount field as shown in Diagram 8. In this case, discount provided on the product is 15% of product price.
After providing the percentage discount, select the radio button of Percent from the field Discount Type.
Optionally select the start and end date of Start date/ End date of discount fields.
In this case, start date of the discount is 2010-08-17 and End date of the discount is 2010-08-31 which is expressed in YYYY-MM-DD format as shown in Diagram 8.
Now you're done. Just click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored as shown in Diagram 8.

The new percentage discount would be successfully added to the Product Discount List as shown in Diagram 9.
You’ve just created a product discount of 15 percent for limited period of time.
NOTE: If the discount Amount is entered as a whole number, such as 15%, it will appear as a decimal value in Product Discount List screen as shown in diagram 9.
Even if you add a discount value of 15% when editing an discount value, it will appear as a decimal value in the Product Discount List as shown in Diagram 9.

Enter a Discount amount in the discount amount text box as shown in Diagram 10. In this case, the discount amount chosen is 25.75 USD.
After providing the discount amount, select the radio button Total as the Discount Type.
Optionally select the start and end date for the when the discount must be applied.
In this case, the Start date / End date of the discount is left blank.
Now you're done. Just click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored as shown in Diagram 10.

The new amount of discount would be successfully added to the Product Discount List as shown in Diagram 11.
You’ve just created a product discount of 25.75 USD applicable to any product for an unlimited period of time.

Once you have created discounts, you can add those to products at will. In VirtueMart, you can assign the discounts while creating a product and setting the price for it or while editing an existing product.
Click on List Products under the Products menu located in the left hand side of the Administration panel as shown in Diagram 12.
The VirtueMart, Product List page displays links to all the Products created by the sample data installed while installing VirtueMart and any product that the VirtueMart Admin may have created.

Click on the Product Name for which you want to add the discount from the Product List as shown in Diagram 13.

Select the Product Information tab. Look at the Product price section on the right-hand side. Locate the drop down list box titled, Discount Type. Click the arrow there. All the discounts created earlier will be viewable in the Discount Type, drop down list box.
The discounts are shown along with the amount and dates for which the discount is effective. Select one of the discounts from the list. In this case, select 15.00 %( 2010-08-17 – 2010-08-31), from this list as shown in Diagram 14.
Now you're done. Just click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored as shown in Diagram 14.

The percentage discount would be successfully added to the product as shown in Diagram 15.

To view this, in the frontend of the website, Click on the Shopping Cart link in the Main Menu as shown in Diagram 16.

The product(s) related to that category will be displayed with details such as its original price and total price after discount as shown in Diagram 18.

Select the Product Information tab. Look at the Product price section on the right-hand side. Locate the drop down list box titled, Discount Type. Click the arrow there. All the discounts created earlier will be viewable in the Discount Type, drop down list box.
The discounts are shown with the amount and dates for which the discount is effective. Select one of the discounts from the list. In this case, select 25.75 USD (* – *), from this list as shown in Diagram 19.
Now you're done. Just click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored as shown in Diagram 19.

The total discount would successfully be added to the product as shown in Diagram 20.

To view this, in the frontend of the website, Click on the Shopping Cart link in the Main Menu as shown in Diagram 21.

It is not necessary to create a new discount via the Product Discount List screen. A product discount can be created, for a particular product while creating a new product or updating the existing product.
If you want to add a new discount, it can be done in Update Item :: [Product] screen as well.
In Product Information tab, on the right hand side of Update Item :: [Product] screen, Select ‘Override’ from the Discount Type drop-down list box. Then type a new discounted price in the Discounted Price field as shown in Diagram 24. In this case, the Discounted Price chosen for the product is 195USD.
Click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored.

The total discount would successfully be added to the Product Discount List as well as Product Price would successfully be updated as shown in Diagram 25.

Under Products menu, click on link Product Discount List option to view the newly created discount through this method as shown in Diagram 26.

The total amount of discount can be viewed in Product Discount List. In this case, the product’s actual price was 220.90 USD which was overridden by 195 USD, so the discount amount comes to 25.90 USD as shown in Diagram 27.

To view this, in the frontend of the website, Click on the Shopping Cart link in the Main Menu as shown in Diagram 28.
