To create category in VirtueMart, login to Joomla as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/administrator in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Joomla} and then click on Login as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as Joomla Admin, a Control Panel page opens as shown in Diagram 2. The Control Panel provides access to different Joomla functions and features.

After having installed and configured VirtueMart successfully, the next step that most shopping cart owners need to do is to create multiple categories for their products or services offered for sale. This is how to create categories in VirtueMart:
On the Menu bar hover the cursor on the Component menu item, a drop down list will appear.Click on the VirtueMart sub menu item as shown in Diagram 3.

VirtueMart Configuration window will appear as shown in Diagram 4.

Administration panel is on the left hand side of page displayed. Click on Products as shown in Diagram 5.

On clicking on Products, the Products Sub Menu will expand, click on Add Category to create new category in VirtueMart. The Category Information window will appear as shown in the Diagram 6.

In Category Information window, type the name and description of the category in Category Name and Category Description respectively as shown in Diagram 7.

The Parent option is used when you want to create child categories /sub categories under a Parent / Main category.
For eg. Shirt is Parent category - Ladies shirts and Gents shirts are two sub categories under Shirts category.
If you are not creating any sub categories under a main category then select Default Top Level in Parent option.
If you are creating sub category, simply select the name of the Parent category under which you want to create your sub categories as shown in Diagram 8.

Now click on Apply or Save to save the created Category.
Now click on the List Categories on the left hand side of page under Administration Panel.
A list of categories is displayed as a category tree as shown in Diagram 9.
The newly created category will be seen in this section.
