Adding New Products To VirtueMart

To add product in VirtueMart, login to Joomla as administrator, by simply entering the url_of_your_website/administrator in your Browser. Enter the appropriate username and password {which was provided while installing Joomla} and then click on Login as shown in Diagram 1.

After logging in as Joomla Admin, a Control Panel page opens as shown in Diagram 2. The Control Panel provides access to different Joomla functions and features.

In the top menu, locate the link Components. Click on Components, from the drop down menu that appears click on VirtueMart as shown in Diagram 3.

VirtueMart Configuration window will appear as ahown in Diagram 4.

On the left hand side of page, Administration panel, Click on Products as shown in Diagram 5.

After clicking on Products, the Products Menu will expand, click on Add Product, a New Product window will appear as shown in Diagram 6.

There are 6 tabs in New Product window:

  • Product Information
  • Display Options
  • Product Status
  • Product Dimensions and Weight
  • Product Images
  • Related Products

Click on the Product Information tab, to add the product information as shown in Diagram 7.

Publish?

Used to specify whether the product will be published on the site or not.

SKU

Stock Keeping Unit ( SKU) i.e. an Article Identity Number, usually alphanumeric, of a particular product that allows it to be tracked for inventory purposes.

Name

The name that will be used to identify the product.

URL

A URL that can be displayed with a product. Usually used as a link to the product vendor or manufacturer.

Vendor

The vendor with which the product will be associated.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer with which the product will be associated.

Categories

The product categories with which this product will be associated.

Product Price (Net)

The price for the default Shopper Group. Just fill in a decimal number. Select the Product Currency from the drop-down list at the right.

Product Price (Gross)

The Price including taxes (according to the selected VAT ID) for the default Shopper Group.

VAT Id

The ID of the tax rate that will be applied to this product. Here you can select a specific tax rate for this product. If you don't want that this product is taxed, fill in a zero weight at "product weight" and Disable "Virtual Tax".

Discount Type

Select the Discount to apply to this Product. If no Discount Types are available, add one using the Discount Form.

Discounted Price

This overrides the Discount Type and automatically creates a Discount Record using the Difference between the Gross Price and the discounted Price.

Short Description

The short description that will be displayed on the browse (overview) page for a category or search result.

Product Description

This is the details description that will be displayed on the Flypage (=details page) of this specific product. You can use Mambots/Content Plugin Tags here if you have enabled "Use Mambots to parse Descriptions" in the Store Configuration.

Now click on Display Options tab, to change the display setting for your product as shown in Diagram 8.

Click on the next tab which is Product Status and set the values to the following fields as shown in Diagram 9.

In Stock

The current quantity in stock for the item. Used for shipping and inventory purposes.

Minimum Purchase Quantity

This number specifies the minimum Quantity, which Customers can purchase of this Product

Maximum Purchase Quantity

This number specifies the maximum Quantity which Customers can purchase of this Product

Availability Date

When the current quantity in stock is available for distribution. Used for shipping and inventory purposes.

Availability Text / Image

This is used to display it on the product details page. E.g.: "48 hrs." or "On Order". Alternatively you can select an availability image from the drop-down list below.
NOTE: You can use your own images here! Just copy them to the direcory /shop_image/availability and then you can select them here.

On Special

Used to indicate whether there are any specials running for the product. When checked, this product will be displayed on the "Featured Products Module".

Attribute List

Syntax: Size,XL[+1.99],M,S[2.99];Colour,Red,Green,Yellow,ExpensiveColor[=24.00];AndSoOn,..,.. Adds easy attributes to the product. These are attributes which can be selected by a customer. This does not create items for each attribute value! If you want to check the stock on each item (e.g. green, red and black T-Shirts...use the Attribute Form to add Attributes and after that Item for each Attribute Value using the Item Form.

Custom Attribute List

Syntax: Attribute1; Attribute2; Attribute3. Adds custom attributes to the product. These are attributes which can be selected by a customer. This does not create items for each attribute value! If you want to check the stock on each item (e.g. green, red and black T-Shirts...use the Attribute Form to add Attributes and after that Item for each Attribute Value using the Item Form.

Click on the Product Dimensions and Weight tab to set the following fields as shown in the Diagram 10.

Length

The length of the product.Used for shipping purposes.

Width

The width of the product. Used for shipping purposes.

Height

The height of the product. Used for shipping purposes

Unit of Measure - Dimensions

The unit of measure used in determining the LWH of a product. Used for shipping purposes.

Weight

The weight of the product. For shipping purposes.

Unit of Measure -Weight

The unit of measure used in determining the weight of a product. Used for shipping purposes.

Units in Packaging

Specifies how many pieces of this Products are in one Package.

Units in Box

Specifies how many packages of this Product are in one Box.

Click on Product Images tab and then click on the browse button on the left hand side of page, select the image you want to display for your product as shown in Diagram 11.

Thumbnail

A thumbnail image that can be displayed along with the product.

Full Image

A larger image that can be displayed along with the product.

Click on the Related Products tab. Related Products are assigned to a product to indicate a general relationship of some kind. Related Products can be accessories or other types or a similar product as shown in Diagram 12.

Now you're done. Just click on Save/Apply, to make sure the changes are stored as shown in Diagram 13.
