WordPress Theme Install And Uninstall

There are thousands of websites that offer free WordPress theme for your use. Most of the free themes on offer are really awesome to look at and behave really well with site visitors and are relatively easy to customize if required.

NOTE: Just Google for Free WordPress themes and you will be amazed at the choices available.

Simply visit these sites choose a theme that you like and save this to a folder on your computer hard disk. We suggest the folder name FreeWordPressThemes for this folder.

Once you’ve got a theme of your choice saved to your hard disk, you can then proceed to install this theme, activate it, and have your site content displayed within this theme.

Access The WordPress Admin Dashboard

Open your favorite Browser and enter the following URL is its address bar and hit the Enter key as shown in diagram1.

http://www.<the_website_name>.com/wp-admin
i.e the URL of the website, followed by a forward slash, followed by the word wp-admin.

The WordPress admin login page will be displayed in the Browser as shown in diagram 2.

Enter the appropriate username and password, which was set while installing WordPress 4.X.X. Click on Log in as shown in diagram 2.

After logging in as WordPress 4.X.X Admin, a Dashboard page opens as shown in diagram 3. The Dashboard provides access to many default WordPress functions and features.

Searching and Installing WordPress Theme via WordPress Admin Interface

There is a really convenient alternative method if you are using WordPress 4.0.

Locate Appearance in the left hand side menu items, and hover the mouse cursor on it. In the fly out, sub menu items displayed click on Theme as shown in diagram 4.

The Theme page will be displayed in the Browser window. Locate Add New, adjacent to Themes and click it as shown in diagram 5.

The Add Theme page is displayed in your Browser. In this page themes that are available for free install with WordPress are displayed as thumbnails as shown in diagram 6.

Scroll up / down this page and visually select a theme of your choice.

Once done, hover the mouse cursor on the theme of your choice. A blue Install button will be displayed. Click the blue Install button to install the theme that you’ve chosen.

NOTE: We selected and uploaded the Themes Alley, Responsive Business Theme as shown in diagram 6.

On click of the Install button the Installing Theme <theme name> page will be displayed in your Browser window. After a successfully, downloading and installing the theme chosen you can:

  • Click the Live Preview link for a live preview of this theme
  • Click the Activate link to activate the theme
  • Click the Return to Theme Installer link to return to the theme installer page to download and install another WordPress theme.

As shown in diagram 7.

Click the Activate link to activate this theme and make it the default theme for the WordPress site.

You are returned to the Themes page. The Themes Alley theme is in the top left hand position and is the Active theme as shown in diagram 8.

Go across to Browser tab in which you have opened the site and click the refresh icon in the Browser’s address bar.
OR
Open a new tab in the Browser, enter the site URL and hit Go.

The site content will now be displayed within the Theme Alley theme that you’ve just downloaded and activated as shown in diagram 9.

NOTE: Since this is a new theme, you will have to configure this theme to display your site content properly. Maybe add some new header images and so on.

Congratulations! You have just successfully downloaded a theme and activated it in WordPress 4.0.

Installing A New Theme The Old Fashioned Way

For all the people who have not yet upgraded to WordPress 4.0 please do so at the earliest. WordPress 4.0 and higher does really give the site developer and site visitor a better user experience.

Having said that, it’s not mandatory (i.e. the only way) to use the WordPress 4.0 Add Theme, Upload Theme, user interface. One can still upload a WordPress theme the old fashioned way and then activate the theme and use it. Here is how this is done.

Hover the mouse cursor on the left hand side, menu item Appearance. In the fly out menu click on Themes. The Themes page will be displayed in your Browser as shown in diagram 10. Click Add New.

The Add Themes page will be displayed in the Browser. Now instead of selecting a theme, click Upload Theme as shown in diagram 11.

Since we already have a WordPress theme downloaded to our computer’s hard disk, click the Choose File button.

A file Browser will be displayed in the Browser. Navigate to the folder on the hard disk where you downloaded and saved the WordPress theme earlier on.

Click on the <filename>.zip file, which is the WordPress theme downloaded earlier to select it. When you do this <filename>.zip gets assigned to the file Browser, File Name text box.

Next click Open. You will be returned to the Add Themes page in the Browser.

The WordPress theme <filename>.zip will be visible in the Add themes page as shown in diagram 13.

Click Install Now to install the WordPress theme. The installing theme from uploaded file page will be displayed in the Browser window.

The theme will be uploaded and various messages will be printed on the page as shown in diagram 14.

Click Activate to activate the theme.

You will be returned to the Themes page with the theme that you just activated in the top, left hand side of the page as shown in diagram 15.

Go across to Browser tab in which you have opened the site and click the refresh icon in the Browser’s address bar.
OR
Open a new tab in the Browser, enter the site URL and hit Go.

The site content will now be displayed within the Pytheas theme that you’ve just uploaded and activated as shown in diagram 16.

Congratulations! You have just successfully uploaded a theme and activated it in WordPress 4.0 the old fashioned way.

Uninstallation OF The Active WordPress Theme

To uninstall the current (active) theme from your WordPress website, you first need to Select another theme and activate it. Its only when the current theme is de-activated that it can be uninstalled.

NOTE: Any theme which is not the current (active) theme can be uninstalled with ease. Just follow the steps explained in the material below.

Once the current theme is deactivated you can go ahead and uninstall / delete this theme from WordPress, here’s how you can do it.

In order to uninstall / delete any theme from WordPress, you need to be logged in to your WordPress Admin Dashboard.

From the WordPress Admin Dashboard Locate Appearance in the left hand side menu items, and hover the mouse cursor on it. In the fly out, sub menu items displayed click on Theme as shown in diagram 4.

A list of themes installed in your WordPress will be displayed as shown in diagram 17.

From the list of themes displayed, hover and click on the image of a particular theme you want to uninstall as shown in diagram 18. We have chosen to uninstall / delete the theme named Pytheas.

NOTE: Twenty Thirteen is the active theme as shown in diagram 18.

On click of the theme image, a popup will be displayed. In the popup, at its right hand, bottom corner locate the Delete link as shown in diagram 19.

Click on the Delete, an alert will be displayed, asking for a confirmation to delete theparticular theme as shown in diagram 20.

Click OK in the alert, and the Pytheas WordPress Theme will be successfully deleted.

When the deletion process from the WP core completes the Theme deleted success message will be displayed as shown in Diagram 21.
